R. Elizabeth "Betty" Gregory

R. Elizabeth Gregory, “Betty”, 102 years young and spirited, of Auburn, passed away February 20,2026 at Auburn Community Hospital. Elizabeth was so proud of her age and was just shy of her 103rd birthday, which would’ve been in March of this year. 

Betty was born in Lititz, PA, the daughter of the late Joseph and Janet Zellar Herr and was a graduate of Lititz High School and Shippensburg University in Shippensburg PA where she earned a bachelor of science degree in education.  She taught business administration in the Millersville, PA school system. 

She retired in 1989 from the Western New York Library Council in Buffalo, New York.  Whether Betty was in or outside the classroom she loved teaching.  She also taught swimming for many years, retiring at 90 from our local YMCA where she encouraged and instructed young and old for 25 years. At age 102, she enjoyed her daily walks at Hoopes Park and staying active. 

Betty was a past member of the Owasco Country Club, the Owasco Yacht Club, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and a member of St Peter & John Episcopal Church. 

She was predeceased by her husband David; her twin brother, J. Robert Herr and another brother Theodore Z. Herr.  She is survived by her son, Matthew E. Gregory and nephews Brian, Brett and Ted W. Herr.   

There will be no calling hours. Graveside services will be held in Fort Hill Cemetery on Tuesday April 7 at 10:30AM. Contributions in Betty’s name may be made to the Cayuga County Humane Society, SPCA or to St Peter & John Episcopal Church.
