Richard J. Alfred, 75, of Port Byron, passed away with his family by his side on May 14, 2018 at Clifton Springs Hospital and Clinic. Born in Auburn, he was the son of the late Richard J. and Rose Pelc Alfred. Richard was a 1961 Port Byron High School graduate and an Air Force veteran who proudly served his Country from 1962 to 1968. He was employed as chief lock operator for the NYS Canal System, retiring in 2002. Richard was active all of his life and enjoyed boating, hunting, fishing, tennis and golf.
He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Joyce VanFleet Alfred and their children Rick (Becky) Alfred and Kristine (Jeff) Swink and by his five grandchildren, Bill O'Connor, Kendall and Kelsey Alfred and Garrett and Kassie Swink.
