Obituary of Harold S. Miller, Jr.
Harold S. Miller, Jr., 90, of Owasco and Juno Beach, Florida, passed away peacefully on November 2, 2023 at his home.
He was born in Auburn, New York, to Marie (Dimon) and Harold S. Miller, Sr. He was a 1951 graduate of Smith Technical High School in Syracuse, New York. His first job was as a draftsman at Solvay Process and then at Sargeant Webster. He also worked as a D. J. at WSEN and WHEN in Syracuse to earn extra money. He eventually was employed by Remington Air Conditioning in Auburn, New York, where he met his mentor, Herb Laube. He worked his way up to Regional Sales Manager there.
In 1969 he left to start his own independent sales rep firm, Modular Comfort Systems, which became one of the top performing rep firms in the country. He worked at Modular Comfort Systems for over 30 years and retired in 2001, handing over the business to his sons and grandsons.
He was also one of the founding partners in the Martin Point Development in Owasco. After retirement he became a contributing author, writing articles for 55+ Magazine (The Golden Years), The Citizen (Lake Life) and Roundel Magazine. Harold was a wonderful storyteller and always remembered a great joke.
He had many interests. In his younger years, he enjoyed boating, water skiing and snow skiing with his family. He earned his private pilot's license and he would frequently take his family on trips along the East Coast. His real passion was sports cars. He loved taking long drives and going to races, especially taking his own car to races in Watkins Glen. Mostly, he loved spending time with his family, sitting on his back deck looking over Owasco Lake or enjoying the ocean at Juno Beach, Florida. "Family is everything", he would often say.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Janet (Hirsh) Miller, children Jean (Henry) Kremers of Fairport, Marcia (John) Spoto of Pittsford, Steve (Lori) Miller of Auburn, and Chris Miller of Camillus, daughter-in-law Carla Dowdle of New Philadelphia, Ohio, a sister, Jeanne Crame of Otto, North Carolina, brother-in-law Rob Hirsh of West Palm Beach, his best friend of over 80 years, Joe Pistell of Cortland, 19 grandchildren, 16 ½ great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his son, Ronald Miller, and sister Betty Siracusa.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, November 11, at 11 am at Sacred Heart Church, 90 Melrose Road, Auburn, NY . A private family burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery immediately after the Mass. Arrangements are through Langham Funeral Home, LLC. The omission of flowers is requested by the family.
