Just heard of Steve's passing and was very sorry to hear. My deepest condolences to Amy and all of Steve's family. I became friends with Steve and Amy in their years spent in Lowell, Ma. We made several trips out to his home in NY, and enjoyed meeting and spending time with his family, and even participated in a few Great Races...myself and another Lowell friend, Tom, got roped into the canoe leg of the race ("...it's only about a mile..." Steve told us)...but we still appreciated Steve and his sense of humor even after that first canoe paddling experience. We lost touch after many years, but never forgot about him, and the great friendship we created during our short time knowing him. Steve will be forever in our hearts.

My thoughts and prayer go out to Steve's family. He will go down as a legend in Auburn. He touched so many lives and wanted Auburn to be a place to be proud of. I remember serving with him on the Little League board. As we were making decisions he would always make us remember, every decision we made had to be made putting the kids first. I always admired his leadership style. He was a respected leader and one of the kindest I have ever met. The pride he would get when he talked about his boys was so sweet. I have no doubt in my mind that he will be blessing his boys from up above watching them every step of the way cheering them on. May they find comfort in the blessed life he gave them and carry out all that he taught them. Rest in Peace Steve.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Komanecky family during this difficult time. Sports brought our families together. Steve and I shared many laughs during baseball and sports boosters. Steve and Casey, your Dad had a light in his eye when he talked about you guys. He loved you both very much. Auburn lost a great person, heaven gained one. Rest in peace Steve. The Cousineau Family

To all of Steve's family,
In my time in Auburn Steve was one of the people that I appreciated most. He was always ready to help and was far more concerned about others than himself. I had the pleasure of knowing him when I was at Holy Family and, when we worked together at the Auburn Y. Thanks for being one of the good guys, Steve. Your heart was full of family and Auburn.
You and Jim Courtney showing up in heaven in the same few days must have really got the angels motivated!!
Respectfully,
Dennis Shaw

To Steve's family:
My thoughts and heart are with you as you mourn Steve. I was fortunate to work with him for five and a half years at the Auburn Y, and I shared an office with him for a good portion of that time. I am not an Auburn native, and Steve and I were very different people, but he welcomed me warmly nonetheless, without judgment, from the time that he picked me up at the Syracuse airport for my interview and diffused my nervousness by making fun of me for mispronouncing "Skaneateles" on my first time to Auburn. He let me take risks and showed trust in me when it would have been very easy not to, building a young director's confidence slowly and subtly. Throughout all of this, he fostered a community among the staff at the Y, and I believe that sense of belonging was passed down to the other departments and then to the people we served--it certainly was at camp. Steve said over and over again that he did not "get" camp--the songs, the costumes, the goofiness--but he absolutely understood what camp is really about, behind all the flashy "camp spirit:" being true to yourself and loving others.
Steve talked about Stephen and Casey often in the office--he was so proud of both of them. His legacy goes far beyond his family, though, as the communities he built and grew influenced so many people positively, from the Y membership, to the Y staff, even to Camp Y-O, and--his favorite--Little League. Every time a kid finishes a Little League season with more confidence or better self esteem, that's another one of Steve's runners crossing home plate. That's quite the footprint, and that says something about his love for this community. I am proud to have known and worked with Steve, and I'm so very grateful to have had him as a part of my life. I will miss him very much. He's inseparable from my memories of Auburn in the best ways. Please accept my deepest sympathies for your loss.
Most sincerely,
Joe Murphy

I knew Steve through the Auburn Y when I was involved with Auburn YMCA Gymnastics. He was our connection to the Y and helped us with various functions, including trying to sleep on the gym floor when the girls wanted a sleepover at the Y. The kids had a great time and very little sleep.
Love and sympathy to all of Steve’s family. He will be greatly missed.

To Steve’s beautiful family, and to all of those, like us, who are fortunate enough to be part of his extended family,
Our hearts go out to everyone.
To say that Steve was passionate about everything, is an understatement. The love that he had for his family, his friends, his community, and life in general, is unparalleled.
When he cooked, he wanted the the most perfect butcher block he could use for his work top. If he watched a movie, he would have to watch it multiple times, to make sure he didn’t miss a single message, while he made connections within each movie to his own life. If he went out to dinner, he smiled big at the plate that was set in front of him, and literally savored each and every bite. If he was in the pool, he thoroughly relished every single moment of the serenity it offered.
This same unparalleled passion was delivered to anyone who walked through the doors of the Auburn YMCA during his years within that facility. He made sure that it was more than just a building where people went, met, and worked toward a common goal of staying fit. His reverence to traditions, his business acumen, and his ability to touch the lives of others, resonated throughout a community, not only while he was there, but absolutely did so too...when he was gone.
There’s no doubt that we are all better for knowing him. His smile was contagious. His friendliness was infectious, and his mark on this world and on each of us...indelible.
At peace he rests,
Wayne and Lynn Cheche Baker
